Investigating Estherville Man’s Death
Ruthven – Clarence Monk, 34, was found about 2:50 a.m. Sunday, May 5, lying on the pavement, one-half mile north of Ruthven on Highway 341. He died enroute to Palo Alto Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Report of the accident was made by an Iowa State Trooper and authorities of Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department.
Mr. Monk was employed in the maintenance department of John Morrell and Co., Estherville. He is survived by his wife and five children.

Monk Services Set Thursday
Estherville – Clarence (Butch) Monroe Monk, 34, Estherville, who died en route to Palo Alto County Hospital May 5, will be given funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday.Mr. Monk was found lying on the pavement of Highway 341, one-half mile north of Ruthven at 2:50 a.m. Sunday. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Mr. Monk was said to have sustained internal injuries. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death.
The Rev. Harold Brown will officiate at the services to be held in Redeemer Lutheran Church, Estherville. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Reese-Henry Funeral Home, Estherville, after 1 p.m. Wednesday and until 9 a.m. Thursday.
Mr. Monk was born June 24, 1939 at Ruthven to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Monk. He was educated in Ruthven schools, where was graduated in 1958. On Nov. 8, 1958, he was married to Eva Brown at Lost Island Church, Ruthven.
They lived at Ruthven after marriage and have lived in Estherville the past nine years. He worked for John Morrell and Co. since 1960. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and of the V.F.W.
Surviving are his wife, Eva, one son, Dennis, and four daughters, Doris, Debra, Denise and Danette, all at home in Estherville; his mother, Mrs. Thelma Monk of Ruthven; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Opal Smith of Dickens, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Monk of Ruthven; two sisters, Mrs. Vernon Wittmaack, Sioux Rapids, and Mrs. Mary Lowe of Spencer; also numerous aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

Monk Death Hit-And-Run BCI States
Estherville – The Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation has ruled the death of Clarence Monk, whose body was found on a highway near Ruthven early last Sunday, resulted from internal injuries and it is believed he was struck and run over by a motor vehicle.An autopsy was performed and a report made available to Palo Alto County Sheriff Joe Girres Friday afternoon.
Mr. Monk, 34, of Estherville, was found unconscious on Iowa Highway 341 shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday, May 5, and taken by ambulance to Palo Alto County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He is survived by his wife and five children.
