Mrs. Lee Hammond Dies on Trip
Mrs. Lee Hammond, 55, died unexpectedly at 6 a.m. today at Las Vegas, N.M., en route with Mr. Hammond for a winter vacation in California. Mrs. Hammond woke up this morning coughing and died a short time afterwards.

Mrs. Hammond had suffered from high blood pressure but her health the past year had been much improved and she had felt much better than she had for several years.

The Hammonds had been planning their winter vacation trip to California for sometime and had looked forward to it with a great deal of anticipation. They left Estherville Sunday morning.

Mrs. Hammond was born Nov. 25, 1899 in New York City where she spent her early years and received her education. Her parents died when she was a small child. When she was 18 she went to live with a brother in North Dakota and later attended Mankato Business College.

She later worked as a secretary at Carlton college, Northfield, Minn. where she met Mr. Hammond. They were married Oct. 20, 1925 and lived for a time at Farmington and Winona, Minn. They had lived several years at Rochester, Minn. and Cresco before coming to Estherville in January, 1952 when Mr. Hammond and his son, Robert, took over ownership of Hammond Oil Co. from Jerry Wegs.

Mrs. Hammond was a member of Grace Episcopal church and was active in all phased of church work and the Grace Episcopal Guild.

Mrs. Hammond is survived by her husband, one son, Robert Hammond, one daughter, Mrs. Roy Stroud, both of Estherville, three grandchildren, Robbie and Jane Kay Hammond and Steven Stroud; and one brother, Thomas Kingston of Pillsbury, N.D.

Date for funeral services has not been set pending the arrival of Mr. Hammond from Las Vegas. He is driving back here. The body of Mrs. Hammond will come by train to Sibley and is expected to arrive there on Sunday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 13, 1955)

Last Rites for Mrs. Hammond Are Tomorrow
Funeral services for Mrs. Lee Hammond will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Grace Episcopal church with the Rev. Father Eldin Lougee officiating. A private family service will be held at 1:30 at the Sandin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call at Sandin’s until 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Mrs. Hammond died Thursday morning at Las Vegas, Nev. en route for a winter vacation with Mr. Hammond in California.

A memorial fund has been established and those wishing to participate may leave their contributions with members of the family or with Father Lougee.

Pallbearers will be C.W. Robinson, Dr. E.K. Vaubel, Vance Crim, Earl Bagan, A.O. Olson of Dodge Center, Minn. and Hubert Haskins of Clarion. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 17, 1955)
