Estherville – Funeral services for Dorothy A. Story, 95, of Estherville will be held at 2 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville with the Rev. Mark Gabbard officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery in Estherville. She died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.
Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26 at the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville.
Dorothy was born on April 23, 1908 in Dunnell, Minn., the daughter of George W. and Helen Elizabeth (Rhodes) Gruwell. Dorothy received her education in the Estherville schools graduating from Estherville High School in 1925. She then attended Milwaukee Downer Women’s College and received her Bachelor’s of Art Degree from the University of Iowa.
On April 9, 1933, she was united in marriage to Glenn Story in Estherville. After their marriage, Dorothy was employed by the Estherville Daily News from 1930-1970, serving in many capacities, specializing in stories of History in Emmet County. Mr. Story died in 1971.
Dorothy was then employed at Estherville Community College, where she started a Journalist Class, retiring in 1975. Dorothy was still active in a 1st grade reading program at the Good Samaritan Center.
Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville since 1912, where she had served as Elder and Secretary of the Church Board. She was also a seventy years member of P.E.O.; V.F.W. Auxiliary; Historical Society and the Library Board. She also enjoyed traveling, reading and typing stories on her computer.
Dorothy is survived by nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She has been preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Willis Gruwell and his wife, Lila. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 27, 2003)
