Hiram Barrett was born in Worcester, N.Y. July 28, 1823. Was married to Mary J. Clark April 1856. Moved to Emmet county, Iowa 1861. Resided here until 1870 then moved to Round Lake, Minn. Resided there until 1888, when he moved back to Estherville, where he resided until his death. His death resulted from pneumonia, which came upon him one week ago. For a number of years he has been a great sufferer. He died at his home in this city, Monday, Sept. 28. His funeral was held from the M.E. church Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. H.G. Pittinger and his remains laid to rest in the old cemetery north east of the city. [East Side] (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, October 1, 1896)

Hiram Barrett was born in Worcester, N.Y., July 28, 1823, and married April 1856 to Miss Mary J. Clark. He moved with his wife to Emmet county in 1861 and resided here until 1870 when he removed to Round Lake, Minn. In 1888 he returned to Estherville and has since resided here. He became united with the M.E. church at Round Lake in 1877.
By his death Estherville loses one of its truest and best citizens. He had been in poor health for many years, yet he was endowed with great energy which upheld him to the last. He was a noble character and strong zeal for the cause of truth. His sympathetic heart and his agreeable ways won many friends among the citizens of Estherville.
The wife is left alone to mourn his loss. But one child was born to the couple and he was taken away in early childhood. The funeral was held at the M.E. church in this city at 2:30 Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H.G. Pittinger. His remains were laid to rest in the East Side cemetery. Hiram Barrett died at Estherville September 28th, aged 73 years. Deceased came to Emmet county in 1861, and in 1879 made a home on the bank of Round Lake, Minnesota, which was then beyond the bounds of civilization. Mr. Barrett was well known here, and frequently visited friend and relatives about the lakes. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, October 2, 1896)
