Samuel Freed Passed Away Last Tuesday, Aged 73

In the year of 1882 he was united in marriage to Laura Warner of Spirit Lake, on May 13th. To this union were born nine children, five girls and four boys, two preceding him in death, namely: Herman and Leonard, Leonard dying in infancy and Hermon preceded his father on the 16th of June, 1929. Those living to mourn his timely loss are his wife, Laura Freed, and daughters, Mrs. P.J. Meek of Austin, Minn.; Mrs. Paul Drushella, of Dakota City; Mrs. Pete Webber, who is with them at the parental home in Estherville; Mrs. Vernon Wertz of Estherville; Mrs. Jas. Monroe, of Esenville, Mich.; Perry Freed of Canada; Ernest Freed of Estherville. Besides two brothers living in Grundy Center and a host of other relatives and friends.

The writer of this obituary was very much shocked to learn of the sudden departure of my Uncle Sam. Very often I have driven to the city of Estherville during the past eleven years and never did I fail to stop and extend my right hand for a shake with uncle Sam. I have conversed on several different occasions on different topics of the day and have always found him looking on the bright side of life. Uncle Sam was a firm believer in the up-building and advancement of this great world. Very often in our course of conversation he would say to me, “I wish I had the chance to get an education as they do now-a-days.” I can hear him yet, stirring the fire in the early morning. No more will I hear
Uncle rattle the stove,
Early in the morning
When Lights are low.
No more will he greet me
Outside of the door
With that good hand shake,
I’ve mentioned before.

No more will I hear him talk of the past,
Or the future where he is resting at last.
Rest on dear Uncle,
Your life you’ve lived fine.
And this little tribute
Is from your nephew,

Ca. Klein
(Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, September 24, 1930)
