Funeral services for Leonard A. Bergman, 91, of Spirit Lake, were held Saturday, Jan. 30, 1988 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake, with Rev. Allan Krueger officiating.Mr. Bergman passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1988 at the Hilltop Care Center.
Mary Lou Ayers was organist and soloist Ann Bass sang “The Twenty-Third Psalm.” The congregation also sang “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “Abide With Me.”
Pallbearers were Joe Estes, Steve Gruhn, Dennis Johnson, Quentin Johnson, John Resch and Mike Resch.
Leonard A. Bergman was born Aug. 24, 896 on a farm near Little Spirit Lake, Iowa, to George and Anna (Leo) Bergman. He attended a rural school and graduated from Spirit Lake High School. He was also a student at Iowa State University and ran in the Drake Relays in 1917. He served military duty in World War I.
Mr. Bergman was married in February 1923 to Bernice Nichol at Dexter, Iowa and they farmed their entire life northeast of Spirit Lake until moving to the Hilltop Care Center several years ago.
He was a member of the American Legion and Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his sister, Emma Becker of Spirit Lake and four nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice in February of 1985; a sister, Ida Daib; a brother, Carl; his parents; and one niece and one nephew.
Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 23 and the Turner Funeral Home of Spirit Lake was in charge of arrangements. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, February 4, 1988)
