Funeral services for Bernice Bergman, 86, of Spirit Lake, were held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 1985, 10:30 a.m. at the Donovan-Leyson Funeral Home, in Spirit Lake, with Rev. Walter Hamer officiating. Bergman died Sunday, Feb. 10, 1985 at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, in Spirit Lake.Joan Mitchell, organist, accompanied Rev. Ben Swede, soloist, as he sang, “The Lord is My Shepherd.” Pallbearers were Joe Estes, Steve Gruhn, Dennis Johnson, Quentin Johnson, John Resch and Mike Resch. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, in Estherville.
Bernice E. Bergman was born to Benjamin Nicoll and Luella Moulton at Algona, Ia., on Aug. 30, 1898. She attended the Estherville High School, graduating in 1914.
On Feb. 24, 1923 she married Leonard A. Bergman at Dexter, Ia.
Bergman worked as a librarian in Estherville, Spirit Lake and Mason City. She was a member of the P.E.O., the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Dickinson County Historical Society.
After her marriage, the couple farmed northeast of Spirit Lake until 23 years ago. They remained on the farm until moving to the Hilltop Care Center in November of 1983
Survivors include her husband, Leonard A. Bergman; five nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ruth Light and Margaret Rouse. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, February 14, 1985)
