ESTHERVILLE - John L. Barlow, 78, retired teamster, died suddenly at 1:30 p.m. yesterday [May 15, 1953] at Holy Family Hospital. He died of pneumonia and complications of old age at 78 years, 11 months.
Mr. Barlow was born June 26, 1874 in Kentucky. He moved with his parents to Kansas and grew to manhood there. On March 20, 1896, he married Alma Bloomquist here in Esthervile and to this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls.
Retired for a number of years, he had been a teamster in Estherville, working for L. L. Bingham. In early life he was a member of Modern Woodmen of America. He was a member of the Union Baptist church.
Surviving his death are seven children, Milton Barlow, Mrs. C.J. (Nellie) Haas, Mrs. Joe (Gladys) Sifrit, Mrs. Lewis (Mable) Hoffmeyer and Arthur Barlow, all of Estherville; Carl Barlow of Dunnell, Minn., Mrs. P. L. (Ruby) Kenne of Kent, Wash.; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. One son preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 1;30 p.m. Monday at the Sternborg funeral home and at 2 p.m. at the Union Baptist church, the Rev. G. E. Forssell officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 16, 1953)
