Services Held for Orin [Orvin] Weller Victim of Polio
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church for Orvin H. Weller of Huntington a polio victim. He was the third death in the county from that dreaded disease.Orvin was well known here and in the eastern part of the county. He has been managing an elevator at Huntington and was making good as a business man.
Orvin was assisting with some work on a telephone line at Huntington when taken ill. He became seriously ill on Saturday and was rushed to St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City immediately. He apparently was getting along nicely and his sudden death was not expected. Thursday afternoon we inquired about his condition and relatives seemed to think he was getting along nicely. He died Thursday evening at eight o’clock.
Orvin was born at Mallard on Oct. 23rd. 1922. He was a graduate of the Swan Lake consolidated school. He served in the last war as an instructor in the Naval air force at Corpus Christie and later at Ottumwa. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Rogers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.O. Rogers, June, 1944. Orvin was a very popular young man with a bright future. His personality attracted him to hose who knew him and he made friends easily.
After he left the service he affiliated with the Paul Grave Grain Company and made good.
He is survived by his widow and two children and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Weller who reside at Maple Hill. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, September 2, 1948)
Obituary Orvin Weller
Orvin Howard Weller, the son of William and Sylvia Weller, was born October 23, 1922, at Mallard, Iowa. He attended schools at Curlew and Truesdale and graduated from the Maple Hill high school in 1940 as Valedictorian.He entered Dunwoody Institute at Minneapolis in the fall of 1940 where he took up Auto Mechanics until he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in 1942. He was called to active duty March 11, 1943, for Primary Flight Training at Minot, N.D., from there he went to Iowa City for pre-flight training and from there was transferred to the Naval air station at Olathe, Kans. On June 14, 1940, he received his commission an Ensign at Corpus Christi, Texas. On the same day he was united in marriage to Kathryn Rogers of Estherville, the ceremony taking place in the Navy Chapel at Corpus Christi. At New Orleans, La., he was given additional training in a Flight Instructors school, then serving as an instructor at Dallas, Texas, and Ottumwa. He was discharged from active duty at Great Lakes on November 3, 1945. Since March, 1946, he has been employed as manager of the Paul H. Graves Grain Co., elevator at Huntington.
On Wednesday, Aug. 18, he became ill but his condition was not regarded as serious until Saturday when his illness was diagnosed as polio. He was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City and passed away on Thursday evening, August 26, at 8:00 pm.
He leaves to mourn his departure his widow and two sons, Frederick, nearly 4, and Richard, aged 21 months. Also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Weller of Maple Hill, three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Brietske of Waterloo, Mrs. Clyde Stoltz of Curlew, and Mrs. Wilbur Widman of Havelock, and a brother, Clarence of Mallard. One brother, Alvin, was reported killed in a plane crash while on active foreign duty in Nov., 1942.
The deceased was a member of the Huntington Methodist church. He was active in Red Cross and Cancer Fund drives, always giving his time generously to civic affairs. He was a thoughtful young man, always showing the kindest consideration for those about him and will be missed by a host of friends and relatives.
Services were held Sunday, Aug. 29, at 2:30 in the Estherville Lutheran church, Rev. De Long and Rev. Don Harrup officiating.
Pallbearers were Donald Nelson, Lester Nelson, Al Neppl, Melvin Tirevold, Donald Miller and Kenneth Larson. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, September 23, 1948)
