Former Estherville Lady Passes Away
Mrs. Mary Sutton Died Sunday Afternoon at Carlock, Ill – Funeral Held Here
Friends in this city will be grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. Mary A. Sutton which occurred Sunday [December 28, 1924] afternoon at Carlock, Ill. Mrs. Sutton formerly resided in this city but eight year ago moved to Illinois to make her home. She had three sons in Estherville, Wesley, Frank and John Sutton. Her death was caused by old age and a gradual weakening of her body which followed a paralytic stroke which she suffered several years ago. Mrs. Sutton was the wife of Rev. John Sutton, for many years pastor of the Free Methodist church of this city. Mrs. Mary Sutton was born in Riceville, New Jersey, on June 15, 1845. When she was ten years old she came with her parents to Illinois and settled at El Paso. Here she grew to young womanhood and on October 30, 1866, was united in marriage to Rev. John Sutton. This happy union was blessed with eight children, five of whom are still living. They are Mrs. C.E. Armstrong, of El Paso, John, Wesley and Frank Sutton, of this city, and Mrs. Leo Swanson, of Whittemore, Iowa. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Mrs. E.L. Stephens, Mary Harriet Sutton and Rachel Esther Sutton. She is also survived by one sister, Lotie Render, and two brothers, John and Mose Render of El Paso, Ill., one sister in California and a brother in Oklahoma. Besides these immediate relatives here there are seventeen grandchildren and great-grandchildren to mourn her loss. Mrs. Sutton came with her husband to Emmet county in 1896 and remained here until 1920. Her husband passed away ten years ago. Early in life she united with the Free Methodist church and has been a devout member and devoted worker for the cause of her church ever since. Her life was lived at all times in accordance with the high principles which he held. Always sacrificing her own desires and pleasures for the benefit of others she was a true and worthwhile friend. She was devoted to her family and worked hard that they might have all the pleasure and comforts of life that were necessary. The remains were shipped to Estherville and funeral services will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, Rev. Sutton, of Armstrong, officiating. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in their hours of bereavement. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, December 31, 1924)
