Leaves South With Ashes of Late L.R. Benton
Word has been received here by friends of Mrs. L.R. Benton that she has been ill and unable to leave until Monday from San Antonio, Texas for the north. She is bringing the ashes of her husband to Estherville for burial but will go first to her home in Cedar Rapids to recuperate from the trip.

Mr. Benton’s daughter, Mrs. Mae Compton of South Bend, Indiana, will accompany her to Estherville for the burial rites.

The passing of Mr. Benton, recalled a picturesque figure in the operation of trains on the old Dakota division.

Mr. Benton was extremely loyal to the railway, and always loved to operate trains in construction service, a service in which he excelled, and was counted upon to get the most out of the available material at hand, whether it was gravel work, piledriver service or ditching. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 8, 1938)

Memorial Rites For L.R. Benton Held Saturday
Memorial rites for the late Burton [Lurton] R. [Randolph]Benton, retired Rock Island conductor here were held Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Mahlum and Anderson funeral chapel. Rev. Fred Sawyer of the Christian church conducted the service.

Mr. Benton had passed away Monday, Oct. 24 at San Antonio, Texas, after a short illness. He and Mrs. Benton had gone there a short time previous to spend the winter. The remains were cremated at San Antonio and the ashes interred in Oak Hill cemetery after the rites Saturday.

Mrs. Mae Compton of South Bend, Indiana, only child of the deceased man and Mrs. Benton were here for the services. Mrs. Compton returned to South Bend yesterday evening but Mrs. Benton will remain here to look after business matters before leaving for her home in Cedar Rapids. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 15, 1938)
