Earl William Stick 1918-2009

Earl William Stick, the son of William and Anna (Peterson) Stick, was born May 28, 1918, in Schaeller, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 90 years.

In 1921, Earl moved to Ellsworth Township in Emmet County where he received his education in rural schools and graduated from Emmet Consolidated High School in 1936. In June of 1942, Earl entered the United States Army Air Force during World War II. On November 7, 1943, Earl was united in marriage to Ethel Kautz. Following his honorable discharge from military service, Earl returned home to a farm near Huntington and the couple raised their family. Ethel died April 10, 1992. Following Ethel's death Earl remained on the farm until his retirement in 2003.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the L.L.L. in Estherville. Earl also was an active member of Estherville VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91. He served 10 years as an Emmet County Veteran's Affairs Commissioner. Earl enjoyed playing cribbage with his good friend, Carl Ruschy.

Left to cherish Earl's memory are his children, Katherine Puls and her husband, James of Park Ridge, Illinois; Mary VanGinkel of Inwood, Iowa; William Stick and his wife, Karen of Estherville; 8 grandchildren, Susan, Jim, Michelle, Casey, Robbie, Jennifer, Thomas and Elizabeth; and 5 great-grandchildren and special friend, Grace Stigman.

Preceding Earl in death were his wife, son-in-law, Robert VanGinkel and parents. (MC)
