Henry Herum, 80, of Manly, formerly of Estherville, was found frozen to death Thursday [December 27, 1934] at his home by his brother, Chris, also of Manly. When found he was lying by the door with an empty lamp smashed beside him. It is the belief of relatives that he had gotten out of bed to start a fire in the stove and when he could not find any kerosene he picked up the lamp to get the kerosene from it. He has been in poor health for some time and probably suffered a heart attack.
When notified of his death Mrs. A. Egeland and Mrs. Peter S. Anderson of Wallingford, sisters of Mr. Herum, went to Manly and arranged for funeral and burial services.
He was born in Dane county, Wis., on Feb. 14, 1854. When a young man he lived in Estherville but in 1882 he went to Manly and has made his home there ever since. He was a blacksmith by trade but also spent part of his time farming.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Evangelical church in Manly. He is survived by three sisters, Miss Bertha Herum and Mrs. A. Egeland of Estherville, and Mrs. P.S. Anderson of Wallingford, and two brothers, Chris Herum of Manly and Andrew Herum of Randall.
Those from here who attended the funeral services were P.S. Anderson and daughter Pearl and son Chester, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Herum, Mr. and Mrs. Percy Herum, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Herum, and Margaret and Robert Herum. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, January 3, 1935)
