Estherville – Private memorial services for Gulla Ullensvang, 84, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville. She died March 31, 1991 in a Harlingen, Texas hospital.

She was born July 18, 1906, the daughter of Halyer Sjurson and Guro Juilia (Maage) Ullensvang, and attended elementary schools in Emmet County, Iowa, graduated from Estherville High School in 1924. In 1931she received her B.A. degree in education from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She was awarded her M.A. in education in 1938 from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She was one of 29 specially qualified social studies teachers across the United States to be awarded a Rockefeller Foundation grant to participate in summer workshops at Cornell University in New York. She retired to Long Beach area in California. She returned to the family farm near Gruver to care for her two older brothers and took them south to Harlingen to escape the cold Iowa winters. Following her brothers’ deaths she made Texas her permanent home.

Surviving are her nephew and niece; great-nephews and great-nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; sister and a niece. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 11, 1991)
