Martin O. Sampson Dies at Age of 74
Martin Otolal [Olai] Sampson, 74, died this morning at Holy Family hospital where he had been taken about a week ago after suddenly becoming ill. A native of Norway, Mr. Sampson and his wife have been longtime residents of Estherville.

Survivors include his widow, Johanna Sampson, four sons, Harold of Dolliver and Lloyd, Milford and Orville, all of Estherville and three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Irene) Butterfield of Dolliver, Mrs. Ray (Edna) Larson of Armstrong and Mrs. Norman (Wilma) Nelson of Ringsted.

Funeral services for Mr. Sampson will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Sternborg funeral home and at 2 o’clock at the Estherville Lutheran church, the Rev. S. Gjerde officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Monday until time of services. A complete obituary will be published later in the Daily News. Martin Sampson Was Native of Norway
Martin Olai Sampson, son of Sampson and Ingeborg Sorhus, was born Sept. 13, 1881, in Stavanger, Norway. At the age of 16 he came to the United States and settled at Huxley, Ia. On Oct. 26, 1906, he was united in marriage to Johanna Lilland of Jewell. The late Rev. C.J. Eastvold performed the ceremony. After 18 years of farming at Huxley, they moved to Armstrong in 1924 and farmed in Emmet County until they retired to Estherville in 1945.

Mr. Sampson died Saturday morning at Holy Family hospital after a brief illness. He reached the age 73 years and 11 months.

He is survived by his widow; four sons, Harold of Dolliver; Lloyd, Milford and Orville, all of Estherville; three daughters, Mrs. Irene Butterfield of Dolliver, Mrs. Edna Larson of Armstrong, and Mrs. Wilma Nelson of Ringsted, and 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for Mr. Sampson were held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Sternborg funeral home and at 2 o’clock at the Estherville Lutheran church, the Rev. S. Gjerde officiating. Pallbearers were John Tweedt, Louis Valen, Bill Best, Martin Berge, John Stannerson, Olaf Tweedt. Mr. Sampson was buried in Eastside cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Ole Fjelland, Andrew Fjelland and Tom Fjelland. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 7, 1955)
