John S. Sabo Found Dead in Auto Sunday
John Sabo, 58 year old carpenter, was found dead Sunday noon in his car which was parked on North 11th street by Glenn Story. Heart failure was given as the cause of his death.

Mr. Sabo left his home on north 11th street at 9 o’clock Saturday morning and drove away in his Ford auto. After going but a short distance, however, he was evidently seized with a heart attack and brought his car to a stop.

Was Unnoticed
It was not until 1 o’clock that he was discovered, only a few yards from his home, by Glenn Story, who was returning home from down town. The gas lever of the car had been turned off and the ignition switch was off, and Mr. Sabo had slumped down into the seat so that he had not been noticed by other passerby. Sheriff F.M. Brown and coroner, Dr. M. E. Wilson, were notified immediately.

John S. Sabo was born April 19, 1870, at Halsnoien, Norway, and was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Samson S. Sabo. He was baptized in Jelse church by Pastor F.J. Monrad and was confirmed at Halsno church.

Came Here When 19
At the age of 19 he emigrated to America and came directly to Estherville where he had always made his home. He was united in marriage to Johanna Julia Johnson of Estherville March 22, 1899, and to this marriage three children were born.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Nelson Wheatly, and Edna, a son, Lawrence, two sisters, Mrs. George Rugtiv, and Mrs. Serine Mathison, and a brother, Lars, of Sabovik, Norway.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. L.A. Mathre at the Estherville Lutheran church. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, October 24, 1928)

John S. Sabo Died Suddenly Last Sunday [October 21, 1928] of Heart Failure
John Sabo, who has been a resident of this vicinity ---- died last Sunday very suddenly. He had not been in the best of health for sometime past. He has been able to be about and perform some of his regular duties as a carpenter.

On Sunday morning he rose early and left home in his Ford touring car. It was known he had intended to go to the Nelson Wheatley farm to get a radio battery. He did not go to the farm and the Wheatleys drove to town to see what had become of him. The car was gone and they knew he took it away from the home. A Ford car was standing not far away, almost in front of the Fred Storey home. Mr. Storey said it had been there since morning. Mr. Wheatley and Glenn Storey went over to the car and found Mr. Sabo sitting behind the wheel dead. His head was tipped back and it was evident he had felt sick and stopped the car just before he died. It is not know why he went on that road as it was not the direct road to the Wheatley farm. The following obituary was used at the funeral services on Tuesday.

John S. Sabo was born April 19, 1870 [per cemetery records, 1871], at Halsnoien, Norway, the youngest child of Samson S. Sabo and his wife, Bertha nee Thosness.

As a child he was baptized in Jelse church by pastor F.J. Monrad. After the usual instruction he was confirmed at Halsno church. At the age of 19 emigrated to America, coming direct to Estherville. March 22, 1899, he was united in marriage to Johanna Julia Johnson of Estherville. Their union has been blessed with three children, Burnett, now Mrs. Nelson Wheatley; Edna and Lawrence all of Estherville. Besides the sorrowing wife and children he leaves two grand children, Vernice and Robert Wheatley and two sisters, Mrs. George Rugtiv and Mrs. Serine Mathison of Estherville and a brother, Lars Sabo of Sabovik, Norway. During most of his residence here he followed the carpenter trade. He was stricken suddenly Sunday morning as he was starting from his home in his car at the age of 58 years, 6 months and 2 days.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. from the Estherville Lutheran church, Rev. Mathre, officiating. Interment was made at the East Side Cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, October 24, 1928)
