Deceased was stricken with paralysis two years ago and confined to his bed for several months. He recovered sufficiently to be up and around until last July when other aliments came on and he went to Iowa City for treatment. He was found to have a cancer on his side and gradually grew worse until the end came. His mother, Mrs. Lucy [Clark] Phillips, eighty-two years of age, made the trip to Iowa City with her daughter, Mrs. O. D. Barrett, after word was received here Wednesday that he was in a serious condition. He had passed away several hours before their arrival. Daniel C. Phillips was born in Emmet county on December 13, 1869, and lived here practically all his life. For a few years the family lived at Round Lake, Minnesota, but thirty years ago returned to Estherville. Dan was known to nearly everyone in Estherville and all were his friends. He followed the occupation of a painter and was employed for several years by the Rock Island Company.. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Woodmen orders. To mourn his death he leaves a kind, loving and aged mother, Mrs. Lucy Phillips, and sister, Mrs. O. D. (Mary E.) Barrett, residing on east Main street and a brother, Willis Phillips, at Center Square, Penn. Since the death of his father several years ago, deceased had been the main support of his mother and enjoyed surrounding her with the comforts of life. The many friends of the bereaved relatives offer sympathy is their hours of sorrow. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, September 17, 1924)

Dan Phillips Passes Away at Iowa City Thursday
Dan Phillips departed this life on September 11, 1924, at Iowa City. Mr. Phillips was sent to the State University Hospital at that place for treatment July 8th last. Two years ago last May the deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis and recovered sufficiently to do light work until a short time before he left Estherville, when he began to fail. Treatment at Iowa City was advised. All that skill and care could do, however, was unavailing and relief for his long suffering came peacefully Thursday morning at 5:45.

A message received by Mrs. O.D. Barret of this city, sister of Mr. Phillips, stated that his case was serious. The mother, Mrs. Lucy Phillips, and Mrs. Barret left for Iowa City Thursday at 9 a.m. It Is lamented that a message could not have been received in time to have spared the mother, who is past 82 years of age, the long, hard journey, only to find on arriving that her son’s death occurred over three hours before they left Estherville.

Dan C. Phillips was born in Emmet county Iowa, Dec. 23, 1869. Later moved with his parents to Round Lake, Minn. Over thirty years ago the family returned to Estherville where they have since resided.

Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his father, Judah Phillips, and brother, Jacob Phillips. He is survived besides his mother and sister of Estherville, by a brother, Willis of Centre Square, Penn.

Dan, as he was familiarly called, was a member of the Woodman and K.P. lodges. He worked for many years as a painter and paper hanger and was an expert at his trade. He was in the service of the Rock Island railroad for sixteen years as painter foreman. He was at all times faithful to whatever task he set himself to do. Until Mr. Phillips became crippled two years ago he was a constant church and Sunday School attendant.

Since the father’s death several years ago Dan has devoted his life to surrounding his living mother with the comforts of life. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, September 17, 1924)

Dan Phillips Passes Away
After a Long Illness a Lifelong Resident Dies at University Hospital
Was Born in City
Had Been Employed by the Rock Island Railway Before His Last Illness
After an illness extending over several years, Dan C. Phillips passed away at the State University Hospital in Iowa City on last Thursday morning. He had been in the hospital for some time and it was known that his recovery was very doubtful. A few years ago Mr. Phillips was taken with a severe stroke. It was thought at this time that he would not recover. Medical assistance extending over a period of time kept him alive and finally he was able to get about the city by moving slowly and using great care.

Some time ago he was sent to Iowa City for treatment and passed away there before his mother had reached his bedside. Mr. Phillips was born in this city and has always resided here. In later years he has been connected with the Rock Island road, having charge of a painting crew. However, he has not been able to look after this work for three years.

Mr. Phillips was born in this county on December 23rd, 1870, and he has resided here with his mother since that time. He was well known in this city and at one time was an active member of the K. of P. order. He was a member who has always been popular with his fellow members and the order attended the funeral in a body.

The remains were brought here on last Saturday and the funeral services were held from the Methodist church, the Rev. Chipperfield officiating, on Sunday afternoon at two-thirty o’clock. The remains were laid to rest in the east side cemetery.

He leaves a mother, one sister and one brother to mourn his death. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, September 17, 1924)
