ESTHERVILLE - Mass of Christian Burial for Catherine Reuland, 99, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Brian Hughes as Celebrant. Visitation will be 5-7 Thursday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with vigil service at 7 p.m. Interment will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Estherville.
She died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville.
Catherine M. Reuland, the daughter of Otto and Connie (Hemmer) Reuland, was born Sept. 12, 1911, in Alta and moved to Superior as a child.
She graduated from Superior School in 1930 and from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1942. She worked at Iowa State University for a year prior to being commissioned into the United States Navy Nurse Corp in 1943. She served during World War II in Japan and also the Korean Conflict. In 1963, Catherine retired as Lt. Commander with many campaign and service medals. After retiring from the Navy she and Dr. Bob Brooks set up a free clinic for the poor in Mexico. In 2004 after living in San Diego for 48 years she returned to Estherville to be near her family.
Catherine was a member of Arch Confraternity at St. John's Parish in California and belonged to duplicate and many bridge clubs in San Diego. She was also a charter member of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, the first major national memorial honoring women in the military. She was currently a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville.
Left to cherish Catherine's memory are her many nieces and nephews.
She has been preceded in death by her parents; sister, Elizabeth Schacherer and brothers George, Bert, Frank, Matt and Lawrence Reuland.
