Arthur F. Mauss Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack
The community was shocked Saturday [March 6, 1948] evening by the announcement of the sudden death of Arthur F. Mauss, owner and operator of the Walnut Grocery located just south of the Holy family hospital.It was known by the family and close friends that Mr. Mauss had been having heart trouble. He had been out shoveling the side walk and went to the store basement to carry up some merchandise. He hadn’t been feeling well and the attack was sudden and severe. He passed away almost immediately.
Mr. Mauss was born September 18, 1885, in LaSalle, Ill. and he moved to Terril in 1919. He purchased a grocery store on North 9th Street and later sold it and moved to the present location where he has enjoyed a fine business and made many friends.
He is survived by his widow, two sons and three daughters. The funeral services were held on Wednesday at 1:30 from the home and from the Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m., the Rev. C.J. Semans officiating. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 11, 1948)
Arthur Mauss of Estherville Dies Saturday Night
Arthur F. Mauss, 63, brother of C.F. Mauss of Milford, died Saturday evening at his home in Estherville following a heart attack. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Methodist church in Estherville.Mr. Mauss had operated a grocery store in Estherville since 1930. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mauss, former well known Spencer residents. Before moving to Estherville the family lived for a number of years on a farm near Terril.
Survivors include his widow and five children, Mary Mauss of Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. Elvin Lewis of Terril, Mrs. Ed Hutchinson of Spirit Lake, Charles of Los Angeles, Calif., and Robert of Estherville. There are also four grandchildren, five brothers and two sisters. (Milford Mail, Milford, IA, March 11, 1948)
Former Terril Resident Dies at Estherville
Arthur F. Mauss of Estherville died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday of a heart attack. The attack was a sudden one, for he had attended to his business duties throughout the day and had not complained to any member of the family. He had been the operator of the Walnut grocery on North 8th street since coming to Estherville in 1930.He was born at LaSalle, Ill., Sept. 18, 1884, and in early childhood joined the Methodist church. He was an active member of the church since then.
He moved to a farm near Terril in 1919 where he lived until he moved to Estherville.
Surviving him are his widow and five children, Mary of Pasadena, Ruth (Mrs. Elvin Lewis) of Terril, Gladys (Mrs. Ed Hutchinson) of Spirit Lake, Charles of Los Angeles and Robert of Estherville; five brothers, John, Charles, William, Edwin and George and two sisters, Clara (Mrs. W.M. Stoakes) and Erma (Mrs. Duncan McCallum) and four grandchildren, Donald and Charles Lewis and Dick and Janet Hutchinson.
His father, mother and one sister preceded him in death.

Milford & Vicinity - Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Stoakes of Cedar Rapids were Friday guests at the home of Mrs. Stoakes’ brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Mauss. They came to Estherville to attend funeral services Wednesday for Mrs. Stoakes’ brother, Art Mauss and remained to visit a few days with relatives at Spencer and Milford and returned Saturday to Cedar Rapids.
