Military Rites for John Mason
Military funeral services for John Allen Mason, 24, who died at 4:30 a.m. yesterday at the Veterans’ hospital in Des Moines will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Estherville Lutheran church.John Mason was the son of Mrs. Mabel Mason of Estherville and Loyle S. Mason of Kellogg, Idaho.
Mr. Mason contracted a dermatitis infection while serving in the navy in the Marshall Islands during World War II. His condition became gradually worse until he was finally forced to give up his school work and entered the hospital Dec. 30, 1950.
His mother returned from Des Moines yesterday where she had been with her son for the past four weeks.
Mr. Mason was born May 10, 1927, in Estherville. He graduated from the Estherville high school and attended one year in the Estherville junior college. He was in his junior year at Iowa university where he was studying pharmacy when he became seriously ill. He would have graduated with this year’s class.
He was baptized in the Estherville Lutheran church.
Surviving are his mother and father, two brothers, Pfc. Loyle M. Mason, who is serving in the marines at Pearl Harbor, Nolan Richard, a senior in Estherville high school and a sister, Mary Jean. He is also survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Amdal and many aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lester Mason.
Friends may call at the Sandin funeral home until 10:30 a.m. tomorrow and at the church up to the time of the funeral.
All service men are requested to be out for the color guard and firing squad from 1:15 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans club. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 28, 1951)
