Mayme Hassel passed away April 8, 1999 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville at the age of 96. Services were held April 12, 1999 at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home with Father Albert O. Grendler officiating.
Mayme was born January 31, 1903 in rural Graettinger to William and Theresa (Zeiser) Boecker. She was raised and received her education in Graettinger.
On February 5, 1929, she was united in marriage to Ben Hassel at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. The couple lived on a farm near Graettinger before moving to Gruver in 1938. Mayme was employed by the Gruver School in the hot lunch program for ten years. She also operated her own wallpaper hanging business for many years. Mr. Hassel passed away September 11, 1979. Mayme has been a resident at Rosewood Manor in Estherville since October 3, 1995. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and bingo.
Mayme was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Estherville.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Mardel Heywood, Spirit Lake; grandsons, Jon Heywood of Livonia, Mi., and Mark Heywood (Colette) of Estherville; granddaughters, Cathy Cohrs (Gary) of Spirit Lake, Nancy Heywood of Pasadena, Calif.; great grandchildren, Spencer and Sara Heywood of Estherville; sister, Lillian Thompson of Estherville.
Mayme was preceded in death by her husband, son-in-law, Bob Heywood, her parents, seven brothers; Ben, Frank, John, Vincent, Russell, Tom and Joe Boecker, one sister, Myrtle Garralts [Gerrelts]. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, April 15, 1999)
