Miss Martha Lough, 87, passed away at the home of her brother, Arlando Lough, Friday [December 12, 1941] at 10:15 p.m. following a heart attack. She was taken ill five weeks ago suffering from a paralytic stroke. Another stroke and a heart attack eventually led to her death.
Miss Lough was one of Estherville’s pioneer women, coming to this community 50 years ago. She was born in Terra Haute, Inc., and in 1854 traveled with her parents in a covered wagon to Jordan, Minn., where the family lived for several years. In 1876 her father and brother came to Estherville and purchased a farm and purchased a farm where the northeast part of the city of Estherville is now located in the vicinity of north Six street from fifth avenue north. The women of the family came to this city in 1891.
Although she was never married Miss Lough greatly enjoyed her home with she maintained after the deaths of her parents until a few years ago. She spent some time with her sister, Mrs. I.J. Overholt at Klemme, Iowa, and three years ago moved to the home of her brother in this city. Early in her life she united with the Christian church and took an active part in the various affairs of this group. Although she was not the type of person who enjoyed publicity or being in the spotlight she had her own circle of friends with whom she was very popular.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Mahlum and Anderson funeral chapel with the Rev. Fred D. Sawyer, pastor of the Christian church officiating. Burial was made in East Side cemetery.
Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Overholt, of Klemme, and her brother, Arlando Lough of this city. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, December 16, 1941)
