Services for Victim of Shooting Will Be in Estherville Tuesday
A former Estherville man was killed in a shooting late Friday [May 8, 1970] night in Searsboro.

Gerald Linn, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, the victim of a single shot from a .32 caliber pistol. He was the son of Alfred and Dorothy Linn, Estherville.

A Grinnell restaurant owner, Carroll Hammond, 43, was held in Montezuma Saturday on an open murder charge in connection with the shooting. Poweshiek County Sheriff max Allen said Linn was shot in the abdomen late Friday night outside Rich’s Tavern in Searsboro.

The incident occurred in a vacant lot next to the tavern which both Linn and Hammond had frequented Friday night. Hammond walked into the tavern after the shooting and reported the incident to police.

Hammond’s arraignment before the Justice of the Peace in Grinnell was continued until Thursday at his attorney’s request.

Services for Linn will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville. The Rev. Karl Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. until time of services.

Linn is survived by his wife, the former Caroline Kintzbock of Grinnell; one daughter, Karen; one stepson, Kevin; his parents; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Linn and Mrs. Martin Johnson, all of Estherville; four sisters, Mrs. Beverly Bannister of Estherville; Mrs. David (Carol) Scott of Windom, Minn., and Nancy and Marcia at home; and three brothers, Richard Linn and David Linn of Colfax and Ronald Linn at home.

Linn was born Feb. 4, 1943 in Estherville. He attended Estherville schools and graduated from Graettinger High School On Oct. 26, 1968, he married Caroline Kintzbock and since that time they have lived near Grinnell where he worked as a farm laborer. Charged With Murder
Grinnell – Carrol Hammond, 43, a Grinnell restaurant operator, was bound over to the Poweshiek County grand jury on an open charge of murder after waiving preliminary hearing at his arraignment in justice of the peace court Thursday.

Hammond is being held without bond in the fatal shooting last Friday of Gerald G. Linn, 27, of Grinnell, outside a Searsboro tavern. (Muscatine Daily Journal, Muscatine, IA, May 15, 1970)
