Hit By Car, Robert Kuen is Killed
Robert Kuen, 21, of Estherville was killed late Thursday [July 27, 1972] night when struck by a car on Iowa 9 just west of Lester in Lyon County.

Kuen was hitchhiking with Larry Denekas, 21, of Rock Rapids when the accident occurred. Denekas suffered minor injuries.

Drive of the car, Robert Lukas, 42, of Rock Rapids, told sheriff’s officers he was blinded by lights of an oncoming car whose driver failed to dim his headlights.

Kuen was the son of Mrs. Luella Kuen of Estherville. He had just turned 21 yesterday.

Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church here with interment in East Side cemetery. Reese-Henry Funeral Home in Estherville is in charge of arrangements and friends may call there after 10 a.m. Sunday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 28, 1972)

Kuen Services Held Monday
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church for Robert Verne Kuen, 21, who was killed last Thursday night when struck by a car on Iowa 9 just west of Lester in Lyon County.

The Rev. H. Allen Wirtz officiated at the services. Burial was at East Side Cemetery. The Reese-Henry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Kuen was born July 27, 1951, at Estherville to Mr. and Mrs. Vernon J. Kuen. He was educated in Estherville schools, had graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College and had finished one year at Westmar College, LeMars.

At the time of his death he was employed for the summer by the Rock Island Railroad at Sioux Falls with the intentions of returning to Westmar this fall. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Kuen is survived by his mother , Luella, of Estherville; his father, Vernon, of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. Harvey (Karen) Kangas, St. Paul; and Donna Kuen, a student at Florida State University, Tallahassee. Also surviving is his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Kuen. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 31, 1972)
