Gary Alfred Sorenson, the son of Henry Arnold and Dorothy (Hiebechuk) Sorenson, was born February 6, 1956, in Stillwater, Minnesota and departed this life at Alexian Brother’s Hospital in Elk Grove, Illinois, on Saturday, March 28, 1998, at the age of 42 years, one month and 22 days.

Gary received his early education in the Wauconda, Illinois, schools. He moved with his family to Estherville in 1969, where he attended and graduated from Estherville High School in 1974.

Following high school, Gary was employed by McQuay’s in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He was later employed painting water towers throughout the Midwest. He lived in Iowa City, Iowa, for a short time and attended Davenport Community College. In 1984, Gary moved to the Chicago, Illinois area, where he was employed by a firm that remodeled hospitals. Following this, he was self-employed as a painter.

Gary was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. He was very artistically talented, was self-taught, drawing facial features and doing pencil drawings. He also enjoyed woodworking.

Gary is survived by his mother, Dorothy Peters of Estherville; his fiancée, LeeAnn Stonecipher, and her daughter, Jenny of Schamburg, IL; three brothers, Henry Sorenson and his wife, Lana of Corning, IA; Michael Sorenson and his wife, Cindy of West Des Moines, IA; Mark Sorenson and his wife, Stacy of Oklahoma City, OK; six sisters, Rosemarie Croner and her husband, Jeff of Estherville; Dr. Margaret Sorenson of Oklahoma City, OK; Christine Rawlings of Estherville; June Neal and her husband, Wayne of Plano, TX; Karen DeMuth of Mt. Pleasant, IA; Annette Dalen and her husband, Jerry of Estherville; seven step-sisters, Dr. Susan Pollen; Shelly Peters of Colorado Springs, CO; Katie Peters of Forest City, IA; Nancy Peters of League City, TX; Jenny Peters of Iowa City, IS; Mary Ellen Peters of Des Moines, IA; Teresa Peters of Salem, NH; one step-brother, Martin Peters and his wife, Janet of Pomona, KS; and many nieces and nephews. He has been preceded in death by his father, Henry; and his stepfather, Ed. Peters. (MC)
