Leo Mitchell, the son of Charlie and Lulabelle Mitchell, was born August 25, 1920 in Granada, Minnesota. He passed away Sunday, September 8, 2002, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 82 years and 13 days.
He received his education in country schools. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Leo was united in marriage to Louise Thompsen on December 2, 1943.
On July 10, 1951, Leo was united in marriage to Mabel Hassel in Jackson, Minnesota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Estherville where he was employed at John Morrell and Company. Leo retired from Morrell’s in 1982. He enjoyed golfing and playing the lottery.
Leo was a member of American Legion Post 91 in Estherville.
Leo is survived by his wife, Mabel of Estherville; his children, Marvin Mitchell and his wife, Dorrie of Estherville, Iowa; Jerry Mitchell and his wife, Mary of Sibley, Iowa; Evelyn Knepper and her husband, Ed of Welcome, Minnesota; Morris Mitchell and his wife, Sam of Silt, Colorado; Colleen Sheppard and her husband, Mike of Mt. Dora, Florida; Ronnie Mitchell and his wife, Kathy of Netherland, Colorado; Debbie Benz and friend, Bruce of Spencer, Iowa; Maxine Gout of Chandler, Arizona; Dottie Heittof and her husband, Glenn of Carroll, Iowa; Kathy Ross and her husband, Rodney of Glendale, Arizona; Gary Hassel and his wife, Donna of Anaheim, California; Steve Hassel and his wife, Linda of Worthington, Minnesota; Vincent Hassel and his wife, Jane of Chandler; Vineta Shyrock and her husband, Norman of Estherville; fifty grandchildren and fifty-five great-grandchildren.
He has been preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; five brothers; two daughters, Marlys Hutchens and Joleen Mitchell; and one son, John Hassel. (MC)
