Clara Maxine Bollig, the daughter of Julius William and Clara Frances (Smith) Bollig, was born March 6, 1914 in Seneca, Iowa and departed this life at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville, Iowa, on Tuesday, November 28, 1995, at the age of 81 years, eight months and 22 days.

Maxine received her education in the Seneca schools, graduating from Seneca High School.

On January 25, 1937, she was united in marriage to John Joseph Metzger, Sr. in Bancroft, Iowa. Maxine lived in Seneca and Algona, Iowa, before moving to Estherville in 1951. She was employed at Woolworth’s and the Ben Franklin Store in Estherville. Mr. Metzger died in 1985. Maxine has been a resident at the Good Samaritan Center since August of 1995.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughter’s of America, Holy Family Hospital Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, especially 500 and belonged to a local card club. Maxine also enjoyed traveling with her brother and sister.

Maxine is survived by one daughter, Carole Metzger O’Rourke of Minneapolis, MN; one son, Howard Metzger and his wife, Pat of Estherville; nine grandchildren, Patrick O’Rourke of Minneapolis; Thomas O’Rourke and his wife, Merja of Seattle, WA; Daniel O’Rourke of Minneapolis; Howard Metzger and Shane Metzger of Estherville; Helen Metzger of Storm Lake, IA; Kirk Metzger of Ford Madison, IA; Burt Metzger of Urbandale, IA; Hogan Metzger in the US Navy, stationed in Hawaii; 2 great-grandchildren, Jonathan O’Rourke of Seattle; Brody Archer of Storm Lake; one brother, Gordon Bollig and his wife, Kit of Bancroft, Iowa; two sisters, Donna Jean Muller of Whittemore, IA; Betty Ann Kollasch of Rodman, IA; one sister-in-law, Ann Bollig of Algona, IA; and also, Dennis O’Rourke and Alice Metzger. She has been preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; her son, John who died in 1993; four brothers, Howard, Don, Kenny and Gene; and two sisters, Camilla Metzger and Ione Irmiter. (MC)
