Josephine Agnes Moneke, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Opbrock) Moneke, was born September 28, 1908, in Lake Andes, South Dakota. She passed away Friday, June 25, 2004, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 95 years, eight months and 27 days.

She graduated from Geddes, South Dakota, High School in 1926.

On October 17, 1938, Jo was united in marriage to Adrian C. Joy in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1955, the couple moved to Estherville where they made their home and owned and operated a hardware store, Joy’s Western Auto for many years until their retirement. Adrian died May 5, 1979. In her leisure time Jo enjoyed playing bridge, quilting, reading and politics. She was very interested in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildrens’ lives.

Jo was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. She also participated in the Altar and Rosary Society in the church.

Left to cherish Jo’s memory are her children, Sharon Joy of Estherville; Gary Joy and his wife, Kay of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; Lee Ann Joy Gersmeyer and her husband, Paul of Rosemount, Minnesota; Mary Jo Joy and her husband, Jamie Sonsini of Santa Barbara, California; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jo in death were her husband; one grandson, Michael Joy; her parent; four brothers, Herman, George, William, Sylvester; three sisters, Edith Zenick, Bertha Morrow, and Sofia Drotzman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Avera Holy Family Hospice. The Rosary in Jo’s hands were given to Jo by her dear friend, Eleanor Lundgren. (MC)
