Maurice George Becker 1940-2002

Maurice George Becker, the son of Peter and Bertha (Thul) Becker, was born January 14, 1940, in St. Joe, Iowa, and departed this life on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Dickinson County Hospital in Spirit Lake, Iowa, at the age of 62 years, three months and four days.

He received his education in the St. Joe Catholic School in St. Joe, Iowa, graduating in 1959

After graduation from high school, Maurice was employed at Pioneer in Algona, Iowa. In the 1960’s, he moved to Estherville, Iowa, where he was employed for the John Morrell and Company Meat Packing Plant. On December 27, 1975, Maurice was united in marriage to Judith (Judy) Faye McQuown at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The family made their home in Estherville, where Maurice continued to work for John Morrell until the early 1980’s and in1987, he started working for Becker Gravel out of Stratford, Iowa. He was the rock crusher operator for the company until 2001, when he was diagnosed with cancer. For hobbies Maurice enjoyed fishing, playing and watching basketball, walking, camping and playing cards. He was an Iowa Hawkeye and Estherville Lincoln Central Fan. He also loved just spending time with his family.

Maurice was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville.

Maurice is survived by his wife, Judy of Estherville; two daughters, Sharon Lawinger and her husband, Jason of Stoughton, Wisconsin; Sheila Foster and her husband, Austin, of Incirlik Air Force Base, Adana, Turkey; one grandson, Connor Jacob Foster; his mother, Bertha Becker of St. Joe, Iowa; four brothers, Allen Becker and his wife, Pat of Humboldt, Iowa; Art Becker and his wife, Kathy of Ogden, Iowa; Chuck Becker and his wife, Liz of Stratford; and Jim Becker of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Leland and Jeanette McQuown of Wallingford, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He has been preceded in death by his father. (MC)
