Glenn Leroy Howard was born June 10, 1930, near Gruver, died 7:30 a.m. Friday of bulbar type polio at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City. Howard became ill Aug. 22 and the ailment at first was diagnosed as stomach flu. His condition becoming worse he was taken on Wednesday last week to Park View clinic where it was learned he had polio.

Immediately he was taken to St. Joseph’s where doctors reported was suffering from the bulbar type polio. He was put into an iron lung Thursday morning, but his condition continued to become worse and his death the next day.

Glenn grew up in the Gruver community and received his education in the Gruver public school where he participated in all high school sports. He graduated in 1948 and since had been farming with his brother, Donald.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Howard of Estherville; two sisters, Mrs. William Poppenga of Sioux Falls, and Alice at home.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Estherville Presbyterian church with Rev. H.C. McMican of Gruver officiating, burial in East Side cemetery.

In addition to the many floral offerings sent to the church, friends and relatives donated $82 to be given to the polio fund. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 1, 1949)

Glenn Leroy Howard was born June 10, 1930, near Gruver, IA, son of Herbert and Alice (Folken) Howard and died 7:20am Friday of bulbar type polio at St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City, IA.

Glenn received his education in the Gruver public school, having graduated from Gruver with the class of 1948. Since graduation he had been farming for his brother, Donald. Glenn had played on the Gruver high school basketball and baseball teams and was an outstanding athlete. Survivors include his parents, four brothers Donald, William, Emerson and Harold, all living near Estherville, and two sisters, Alice of Estherville and Elvera in Sioux Falls, SD.

Services will be Monday Aug. 29th at the 1st Presbyterian Church with burial in East Side Cemetery. (unidentified clipping)
