Fort Dodge – Funeral services for Donald Walz, 77, of Fort Dodge will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 8 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. Interment will be held on 1 p.m. Sunday, March 9 at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Estherville. He died on Thursday, March 6 at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 7 at Bruce’s Funeral Home with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. and vigil services at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also will be held on Saturday, March 8 from 4-8 p.m. at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born on April 1, 1922 in Emmetsburg, the son of Carl and Hathe (Reese) Walz. The family moved to Estherville when he was one-year-old. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1940. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was discharged from the service in 1946. He worked for Bordon’s in Estherville until 1962 when he transferred to Fort Dodge. He later worked for Pan Gold Bakery and Kennedy Distributing as a driver and salesman. He then worked for the Fort Dodge Creamery until he retired in 1981.

He was a life member of the VFW, DAV, Military order of the Purple; he also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, past vice-president of Liscombe Bay Survivors Association and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Fort Dodge; daughters, Retha Ann Howell of Fort Dodge and portin Kay Jackson of Ottumwa; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Flewelling of Tacoma, Wash.; brother James Walz of Bothell, Wash.; and half brother John Walz of Estherville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Rose Elwood Walz, one sister and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 7, 1997)
