Estherville – Funeral services for Loretta Spoo, 90, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Jerry Cosgrove officiating. Interment will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Estherville. She died on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville with a vigil service at 7 p.m. in the chapel.
Loretta was born on April 4, 1912 in Westphalia, the daughter of John and Antonia (Kohles) Pluth. Loretta received her education in Estherville Schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1932.
On Nov. 27, 1935 she was united in marriage to Elmer Spoo at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. The couple farmed in the rural Gruver area until 1959. Then the couple moved into Gruver to make their home. Loretta worked as an assistant Postmistress at the Gruver Post Office for 18 years. Elmer and Loretta also enjoyed spending winters in Harlingen, Texas.
Loretta was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. C.D.A., Midway and Ryan Lake Country Clubs for many years and she was a 4-H leader.
For hobbies, she enjoyed sewing, she was an avid crafter, flower gardening, oil painting and dancing.
Loretta is survived by her husband, Elmer of Gruver; four children, Mary Ann Hoffmeyer of Gruver; Ronald Spoo and his wife, Esther of Colorado Springs, Colo.; E. Jerome Spoo and his wife, Karen of San Angelo, Texas; Joan Koosman and her husband, Virgil of Rogers, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Duane, Lanny and Monte Hoffmeyer, Margie Collins, Mark Spoo, Wayne Spoo, Dee Ann Sturdivant, Deron Spoo, Vicki Thiele and Jay Koosman; 11 great-grandchildren, April, Erik, Megan, Alex, Ryan and Paige Hoffmeyer, Erin and Sean Collins, and Kira, Caleb and Seth Spoo; one sister, Hilda Wempe of Estherville.
She has been preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Leonard, Urban and Romaine, two sons-in-laws, John Thomas and Jerry Hoffmeyer. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 24, 2002)
