Estherville – Funeral services for Richard Joseph Hughes, 34, Estherville, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville, with Father Albert O. Grendler officiating.Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Estherville, with Fuhrman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, and a rosary will be said at 8 p.m., both at the funeral home.
Mr. Hughes drowned Thursday [October 11, 1979] in the Des Moines River. He was born on Sept. 1, 1945 in Graettinger, to William and Bernadette Hughes, Graettinger. He was educated in the Terril schools and graduated from Terril High School in 1964.
He married Sandra Dalton on Feb. 14, 1969, in Emmetsburg. He lived in Estherville and was an employee at John Morrell and Co. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra, two sons, Tony and Ryan, and one daughter, Amy, all of Estherville; his mother, Bernadette Hughes, Graettinger; four brothers, James and Robert, both of Graettinger; Frank, Cedar Falls, and William, Clear Lake; three sisters, Mrs. Cecilia Finnegan, Ruthven, Mary Hughes, Bellingham, Wash., and Mrs. Theresa Newhouse, Hastings, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 12, 1979)
