C.W. Higgins Funeral Held Last Sunday
Well Known Citizen of Graettinger Passed Away in Estherville Hospital Friday; Funeral Held Sunday Afternoon
C.W. Higgins, for many years one of the well-known residents of this farming section, passed away in an Estherville hospital at 4:40 a.m. Friday morning. The cause of death was from shock following the amputation of his left foot. Last Winter Mr. Higgins had his foot frozen and it was necessary to amputate one of the toes at that time. It caused him a great deal of pain and inconvenience during the following months and lately complications developed that necessitated the amputation of the foot.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o’clock. Burial was in the Estherville cemetery. Three of the pall bearers were Graettinger people. They were Jess Fleming, Fred Rubink and Glenn Young. Mrs. Fleming was also among the local people in attendance at the funeral. The Rev. Frank Yearnd conducted the services.

Charles W. Higgins was born in 1871 in St. Clair county, Missouri. He resided at Collins, Missouri, until he was 26 years of age. In 1897 Mr. Higgins was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Trucks. Following their marriage they made their home in Dedham, Iowa, for 21 years. In 1918 they moved onto a farm in the Graettinger locality and continued in this line of activity in this community until March 1, 1935, when they held a farm sale and moved to Estherville to make their future home.

Mr. Higgins was the youngest of a family of eight children, only one now surviving. Mr. Higgins’ death is mourned by his wife and one son, Carl.

The Times publisher regrets to learn of the death of Mr. Higgins. He was, during the years of his residence in this community, a loyal friend of the publisher. Mr. Higgins was a man generous to a fault. He was always good natured and friends enjoyed visiting with him. He was successful in his line of occupation until the years of the depression and failing health affected him as others were affected during the years of the hard times. Mr. Higgins was a man who had no enemies. He never spoke an unkind word of anyone. His generous nature and his whole hearted disposition prompted him frequently to aid those whom he felt were in need of assistance and a word of encouragement in the Good Fridays of their lives. Deceased was a devoted husband and father and one of the most obliging of neighbors. The Times extends sincere sympathy to Mrs. Higgins and her son in the sad loss they have been called upon to bear.
