Handeland Dies at 79 After Attack
Andrew Handeland, 79, longtime Emmet County resident, died yesterday about 8 a.m. after suffering a heart attack at his home.Mr. Handeland suffered a heart attack in 1958 but recovered and was able to return to work. For the past few months he has been failing in health and for two weeks in October he was a patient at Holy Family Hospital.
Born June 14, 1887, in Norway, he was the oldest son of Ole and Kristi Handeland. When he was 15 he came to the United States and began working in this area for the railroad and as a carpenter.
He was married Jan. 1, 1914, to Susie Matheson at Armstrong. Mr. and Mrs. Handeland, after their marriage, lived in Estherville for five years. Both were members of Estherville Lutheran Church.
After leaving Estherville they farmed for many years in the Gruver and Dolliver vicinities. Mr. Handeland became a member of Palestine Lutheran Church when they lived near Dolliver and served the church in many capacities, 1934-1949.
That year they moved back to Estherville, where Mr. Handeland resumed the carpenter trade. At the time of his death he was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Handeland celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Jan. 5, 1964.
He is survived by his wife; six daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Lillian) Schroeder of Welcome, Minn., Mrs. A.C. (Hazel) Cuff, Mrs. Carsten (Edna) Emerson, Mrs. Robert (Agnes) Steele, all of Minneapolis, Mrs. Arnold (Alice) Olson and Mrs. Lloyd (Helen) Birkland of Ringsted.
Two sons, Lester and George, both of Ringsted; 25 grandchildren; a brother, Ole, and two sisters, Berentina and Mrs. Elizabeth Tennyson, of Superior, Wis.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.
Funeral services are to be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Estherville Lutheran Church following a family service at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Roy M. Hendrickson officiating.
Friends may call at the Reese-Henry Funeral Home until noon tomorrow when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services.
Pallbearers will be grandsons of Mr. Handeland, Ronald Olson, Morris Emerson, Timothy Handeland, Gary Steele, John Birkland, and Russell Handeland. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 25, 1966)
