Frank Grems of Gruver Dies at Local Hospital
Moved to Swan Lake in Year 1883
Gruver, Aug. 14 – Funeral services were conducted Sunday by the Rev. Paige for Frank Grems who died last Thursday evening at an Estherville hospital where he was taken two weeks before his death for treatment. He was 53 years old at the time of his death.Frank Grems was born Nov. 8, 1874, at Fredericksburg and came to Swan Lake with his parents in 1883. He was married to Miss Kate Brannon Nov. 6, 1909. He had many friends in this community who mourn his death.
He is survived by his wife; four children, Alice, George, Grace, and Vera; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Buck and Mrs. Will Harvey; three brothers, George Grems of Moline, Ill., Will Grems of Davenport, and Walter Grems of Swan Lake; and two half-brothers, Roy Goldsberry of Hollandale, Minn., and John Goldsberry of Gruver.
Burial was made in the East Side cemetery at Estherville. Mrs. Albert Mahlum sang at the funeral services Sunday. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, August 15, 1928)
Pioneer Citizen Was Laid to Rest in East Side Cemetery Sunday
Frank Grems was born November 8, 1874, at Fredericksburg, Iowa, the son of George and Caroline Perkins Grems and died Thursday, August 9, 1928, at Estherville, age 53 years. When he was nine years of age in 1883, he moved with the family to Swan Lake where he has lived his manhood years. He received his education at the Swan Lake School and was director of the school and president of Center school board for many years and took an active interest in school affairs. On November 6th, 1909, he was united in marriage to Miss Kate Brannon, to which union four children were born, Alice, George, Grace and Vera, who with the mother mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. He also leaves to mourn his loss, five brothers, F.M. Goldsberry, of Hollandale, Minn.; John Goldsberry of Gruver; George Grems of Moline, Ill.; and Walter Grems of Iowa Lake; also two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Harvey and Mrs. Carrie Buck of New Mexico, all of whom but George were present for the funeral which was held from the home Sunday afternoon, Rev. Page preaching the funeral sermon. Burial was made in the East Side Cemetery beside his father and mother who had preceded him in death. Mrs. Henry Mahlum sang at the services and the pallbearers were his brothers, Roy and John Goldsberry and Walter Grems; two brothers-in-law, Ray Brannon and Will Harvey, and nephew, George Harvey. He also left a large number of nephews and nieces to mourn his departure. Frank being one of the pioneer residents of this county and engaged in drilling wells over the county, had a very wide acquaintance and will be greatly missed in the community.
