DeVoss Dies at Age 75
Jesse F. DeVoss, 75, a retired Estherville farmer, died at 4:25 a.m. today of infirmities of advanced age at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.Mr. DeVoss farmed east of Estherville from 1937 until retirement in 1947. He moved to Estherville in 1959.
Jesse Franklin DeVoss was born Aug. 26, 1889, in Guthrie County. He was the son of James and Nancy Burden DeVoss.
After receiving his education in Guthrie County schools, Mr. DeVoss married Calista [Ada Calista] Johnson Oct. 8, 1913, at her parents’ home near Yale. He and his wife then farmed near Ocheyedan from 1916 until they moved to the Estherville are in 1937.
Mr. DeVoss was a charter member of the Osceola County Farm Bureau, a clerk of Center Township for about 10 years, past president of the Osceola County Fair Board, and member of the Emmet County Fair Board. He was an Elder and member of the Gruver United Presbyterian Church in Gruver.
He is survived by his wife, Calista, one daughter, Mrs. Gladys Nelson of Estherville; two sons, James of the State College of Pennsylvania, and Delmar of Sterling, Colo.; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville, and one sister, Bertha Vandevanter both of Guthrie Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, five sisters, and one grandchild.
Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the Gruver United Presbyterian Church in Gruver with Rev. Jack McCreary officiating. Family services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Church Chapel.
Burial will be in the East Side Cemetery in Estherville. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 17, 1966)
