Sylvester Clark has suffered a relapse since arriving here from Pennsylvania and is now lying dangerously sick at the home of Hiram Barrett. (Semi-Weekly Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, December 8, 1896)

Sylvester Clark has grown much worse since arriving home from Pennsylvania. The trip, it seems, was more than he could stand and his relatives have little hope for his recovery. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, December 9, 1896)

Death of Sylvester Clark
Sylvester Clark died of heart disease at the home of Mrs. H. Barrett, December 12th, 1896, aged 60 years, 4 months and 3 days.

The deceased was born in Mohawk county, New York, August 9th, 1836. He was married to Bathena Youker, March 9th, 1865. Two children were born to them, a son and a daughter, both of whom survive. Twenty-eight years ago they moved to Emmet county, Iowa and settled near Estherville. When a boy he was converted to God and joined the Methodist church of which church he has been a consistent member for 45 years. He was also a soldier in the Union Army. After the death of his wife last spring he concluded to go east to Michigan and Pennsylvania and spend some months visiting relatives and friends. In Pennsylvania he was stricken down with heart disease from which he never rallied. It is a marvel that he ever lived to make the long and tedious trip back home. He passed peacefully away on Saturday morning, Dec. 12th. He was a man of earnest devoted Christian character. Besides his two children, three sisters and an aged father mourn his loss. His funeral was held from the M.E. church in this city on Sunday at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. M.D. Bevan, and his remains were laid to rest in the old cemetery northeast of town. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, December 16, 1896)
