Gunshot Kills Youth in Gruver
Estherville – Bruce Allen Christophel, 17, died Wednesday night of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at this parents’ home northeast of Gruver, according to the Emmet County sheriff’s department. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Christophel.

The shooting was reported to the sheriff’s office at 7 p.m.

The Christophels live at the intersection of Iowa Highway 9 and Emmet County N40, two miles east of the Estherville Airport.

Bruce Christophel Rites Saturday in Estherville
Estherville – Funeral services for Bruce Allen Christophel, 17, Gruver, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in United Methodist Church, Estherville, with the Rev. Max Goldman officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery.

Mr. Christophel had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 7 p.m. Feb. 27, according to Emmet County sheriff’s department.

He was born Aug. 6, 1956 in Estherville to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wayne Christophel. He attended schools in Estherville and at Lincoln Central where he was a senior. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Estherville.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Christophel, Route 1, Estherville; three brothers, Steven Kenneth, Michael Duane, and Bryan Edward, and one sister, Nancy Jean, all at home; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Thomas of Ocheyedan, and his maternal great-grandfather, Harry Thomas of Spencer.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tim West, Arlin Tiervold, John Eide, Robert Simon Jr., Rodney Prather and Joseph Klingbeil. Reese-Henry Funeral Home, Estherville, is in charge of arrangements.
