Estherville Man Killed in Collision on Icy Highway
Snowden Eugene Baker, 65, Estherville, was killed Sunday when the car he ws driving went out of control on an icy stretch of highway about 1½ miles east of Clear Lake.

According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, the accident occurred about 4:20 p.m. when the eastbound Baker vehicle crossed into the westbound traffic lane on U.S. Highway 18 and was struck by a car driven by Tom Delger, 53, Kanawha.

Delger, his 53-year-old wife, Delia, their son Paul, 12, and an aunt, Gerdie Westin, 72, Mason City, were all hospitalized at Mercy Hospital, Mason City. Paul Delger was later treated and released.

The Iowa Highway Patrol quoted Cerro Gordo County Medical Examiner Dr. C. H. Potter as attributing Baker’s death to brain damage. Baker also suffered a skull fracture, rib fractures, head lacerations and bleeding of the lungs. Baker was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the patrol, the Baker vehicle was across the westbound lane of traffic when struck in the right rear by the front of the Delger vehicle. Both vehicles were demolished. The accident occurred on a strip of ice-covered pavement several hundred feet long. The Patrol reported that the highway in the area contained intermittent stretches of ice-covered and dry pavement. Blowing snow was also reported in the area at the time.

Baker was born May 2, 1903, at Harvey to Mr. and Mrs. John F. Baker. He was educated at Harvey, Lohrville and Emmetsburg schools.

On Feb. 21, 1928, he married Blanche Wilson at Creston. The couple farmed following their marriage in the Terril area until 1966. Baker, who most recently represented a real estate firm, was on a business trip to Mason City at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Phillip, Minneapolis; Richard, Hemet, Calif.; Carrol, Milford; Robert, Estherville; and a daughter, Mrs. Claron (Marvel) Houge.

Other survivors include: brothers Charles, Estherville; and Leo, Des Moines; and sisters,
Mrs. Bernard (Beulah) Hassel, Estherville; Mrs. Don (Susan) Billings, Estherville; Mrs. Richard (Mary) Hanson, Estherville; and Dorothy Satterlee, Estherville.

His mother Sylvia also survives. He was preceded in death by his father.

Tentative services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 20, 1969)

Rites Wednesday in Estherville for S. E. Baker
Funeral services for Snowden Eugene Baker, 65, will be held Wednesday at 2 .m. in the Calvary Baptist Church in Estherville, with the Rev. Kenneth Fogelman officiating. Burial will be in EastSide Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese-Henry Funeral Home in Estherville today until noon on Wednesday, when the casket will be taken to the church.

Snowden Eugene Baker died as a result of a car accident one mile west of Clear Lake on Highway 18 at 4:30 p.m. Sunday [January 19, 1969]. He was killed instantly while on a business trip to Mason City.

Born May 2, 1903, at Harvey to Mr. and Mrs. John Baker, he was married Feb. 20, 1928, to Blanche [Blanch] Wilson at Creston. He had farmed most of his life and in recent years farmed by Terril.

He moved to Estherville in December 1966 and was employed as a real estate salesman at the time of his death. He was a member of the Fellowship Tabernacle Church in Estherville.

Survivors include: four sons, Phillip, Minneapolis; Richard, Hemmet, Calif.; Galen, Estherville; Carroll, Terril; one daughter, Mrs. Claron (Marvel) Houge, Estherville; 21 grandchildren; two brothers, Charles, Estherville; Leo, Des Moines; four sisters, Mrs. Barney Hassel, Mrs. Pauline Billings, Mrs. Richard Hanson and Mrs. Dorothy Satterlee, all of Estherville; and his mother, Mrs. Sylvia Baker, Estherville.
