Died
In Estherville, Emmet county, Iowa, August 5th, 1870, Margaret, consort of Alexander McKay, Esq.The dark and unwelcome shadow of the funeral pall has fallen upon us; the gloom of death’s countenance has made its visit in our village; death is not often kindly received, it came this time and called where least desired, where a beautiful home – a genial hearth and a loving, happy fireside shrank from its approach.
But a shining mark, a bright, beaming star in the social sphere is not passed by sooner than any other of God’s mortals. The manner of the Divine dispensations are unfathomable, and yet, strange, sorrowful and heart-breaking as they are to poor mortality in its weak and unwise ken they are always just: always wise and altogether righteous.
Margaret McKay was a noble, great-hearted woman; refined, cultivated and eve lady-like in bearing, secured the unmeasured esteem of everyone. She was always cheerful, and as she held in her composition the sunshine of life, so she never failed to impart it to those with whom she came in contact. To her faithful husband she was a continued joy, a light and a beacon to higher and nobler purposes in life, and the inspiration of her being will go with him to that home where we shall all gather, and it will be the radiance of a new soul to him which she will recognize and love and retain to herself in the spirit world while endless time revolves. Margaret McKay lives; she is happier, she only sorrows in the mourning of that husband and in his desolated home. She yet is with him and often with her other many relatives and friends in her far off native land. All is well. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, August 10, 1870)
Note: Per marriage notice, 2nd daughter of Ronald Maclaurin. Married to Alexander MacKay Sept. 15, 1869, at Craigard Hotel, Oban, Scotland.
