Another Sad Case of Drowning in a Well
Last Sunday evening there happened another of those lamentable accidents the like of which we were called upon to record in the case of Mr. Olson’s child a few weeks ago. It was to be hoped that such a sad event would not again transpire within the borders of our county; but it seems that, in this case, it could not be foreseen or guarded against. The victim was John Cozzens, a bright lad of eleven years, a son of Mr. James Cozzens of Center township. He was attending to the watering of some cattle from a well near his father’s house. The water in the well was twelve feet deep, and it was three feet to the water. There was a low curb about the well, out of which the water was drawn with a rope and pail. It is supposed that the boy’s feet slipped and he fell in, and being stunned by the fall, was soon drowned. He was discovered about a half an hour after being last seen. His remains were buried last Tuesday by the assistance of a large circle of sympathizing friends and neighbors. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, September 7, 1872)
