Former Fenton Resident Dies of Bulbar Polio
Fenton – Mrs. Leland Anderson, 20 year old Estherville woman and former Fenton resident, died of bulbar polio Thursday in a Sioux City hospital.

Mrs. Anderson, the mother of a year old daughter, was stricken with the disease Tuesday. She was born in Fenton and was graduated from the local high school.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband and a daughter, both of Estherville; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kuecker of Fenton; 2 brothers, Arnold Kuecker, Fenton, and Art Kuecker, Dows, and one sister, Mrs. Earl Wallace of Fenton.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at Estherville. (Mason City Globe-Gazette, mason City, IA, August 12, 1949)

Former Fenton Girl Dies of Polio Attack
A former Fenton girl, Mrs. Leland Anderson, 20, Estherville, died of polio Thursday morning in a Sioux City hospital. She was the first polio fatality in Emmet County.

Mrs. Anderson was the former Evelyn E. Kuecker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kuecker, of Fenton. She was born Jan. 7, 1929 in Fenton. After graduating from the Fenton public school, she worked in Estherville prior to her marriage to Leland Anderson Nov. 25, 1947.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church. Besides a one year old daughter, Judith Kay, survivors include her parents, husband, two brothers, Arthur, of Dows, and Arnold, of Fenton, and one sister Mrs. Earl Wallace of Fenton.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Estherville. (Kossuth County Advance, Algona, IA, August 16, 1949)

Mrs. Leland Anderson, 20, of Estherville, died of polio Thursday. She was Emmet county’s first 1949 fatality from the disease. She became ill on Tuesday with a severe headache. Penicillin was administered. Through Tuesday and Wednesday the headache became more severe and she was taken to Sioux City Wednesday evening where physicians diagnosed her ailment as bulbar poliomyelitis. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kuecker, of Fenton. She was married to Leland Anderson November 25, 1947. Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Judith Kay, aged one year. Mr. Anderson has the sympathy of his many friends in his sorrow. (Graettinger Times, Graettinger, IA, August 18, 1949)

Emmet County’s First Polio Victim
Mr. and Mrs. Don Kuecker, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kuecker and Gladys Schneider of this place and Harold Kuecker, Mrs. H. Kuecker, Mrs. George Maahs and Mrs. George Schultz of Whittemore attended the funeral of Mrs. Leland Anderson at Estherville last Saturday.

Mrs. Anderson was the former Evelyn Kuecker, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kuecker of Fenton.

She was Emmet county’s first polio victim this year. The young wife, only 20 years of age, leaves to mourn her death her husband and a 13 months old daughter. (West Bend Journal, West Bend, IA, August 18, 1949)
