Mrs. Jonas Amdal Dies at Age of 85
Mrs. Jonas Amdal, 85, lifetime resident of Emmet County, died today at 8:15 a.m. at Holy Family Hospital where she had been a patient since Jan. 6. Mrs. Amdal suffered a stroke at her home on Jan. 4.The former Julia Peterson was born Dec. 8, 1876 in High Lake Township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew (Elizabeth) Peterson. She was one of seven children, four boys and three girls of whom only one brother, Adolph Peterson of this city, is still living.
Her parents farmed in High Lake Township and she received her education in the Emmet County schools. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a longtime member of Estherville Lutheran Church.
Julia Peterson and Jonas Amdal were united in marriage May 1, 1897 here in Estherville by the late Rev. Hogbarth Engh, pastor at Estherville Lutheran Church. Mr. and Mrs. Amdal spent their entire married life in Estherville. Mr. Amdal died Jan. 6, 1961.
Mrs. Amdal is survived by two son, J. M. Amdal, Tacoma, Wash., and Gilbert Amdahl, Estherville; four daughters, Mrs. Rolland (Gladys) Schroeck, Mrs. Mabel Mason, Hazel Amdal, all of Estherville, and Mrs. Fred (Lena) Owen, Guthrie Center; 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and her brother, Mr. Peterson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four sons, two daughters, her parents and six brothers and sisters.

Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Amdahl Jr., Michael and Danny of Charles City, are spending the weekend here in the parental Gilbert Amdahl Sr. and Duane Weaver homes. Mr. and Mrs. Amdahl Jr. arrived here yesterday to attend the funeral of Amdahl’s grandmother, Mrs. Jonas Amdahl. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 18, 1962)
