Death of Jacob Whitish
Jacob Whitish died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Marie Elce, at 1201 Barnhart avenue, on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 3:20 p.m. after an illness of long duration of asthma, although he was confined to his bed only three days before his death. Deceased was born in Germany on July 25, 1838, and came to this country fifty-three years ago. In April, 1918, he and Mrs. Whitish came here from Dakota to make their home with their son, Thomas Whitish, and daughter, Mrs. Sidney Elce. Mrs. Whitish passed away three weeks after their arrival here. Since that time, Mr. Whitish has made his home part of the time with his son and the rest with his daughter. He was a man of excellent habits, kind disposition and good to his children. Four sons, J. A. Whitish of Fennimore, Wis.; John Whitish, of Fennimore, Wis.; M. A. Whitish, of Dixon, Ill.; Thomas Whitish of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. Marie Elce, are left to mourn his departure. All of the children except M. A. Whitish were present at the funeral held Friday morning at the Catholic church and interment was in the Catholic cemetery. On account of the regular pastor of the church, Rev. C. P. The remains of Jacob Whitish were laid to rest in this city in the Catholic cemetery on Friday last, the Rev. Kelly, of Graettinger, officiating. Jacob Whitish was born in Berlin, Germany, on July 25, 1838. He came to the United States fifty-three years ago, followed farming in Grant county, Wis., until 1900 when he retired and moved to Fennimore, Wis., where he resided until April, 1918, when he came to Estherville to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Sidney Elce, and his son, Thos. Whitish. He is the father of five children, all of whom are still living and all of whom were here to attend the funeral services. Jacob Whitish died last Tuesday afternoon at the home of his daughter Mrs. Sidney Elce on East Barnhart street at the age of eighty-six years. He came to Estherville from Fennimore, Wis., in April 1918 with his wife, to make his home with their daughter, Mrs. Elce and son, C. M. Whitish. Mrs. Whitish passed away on May of the same year.Mr. Whitish was born in Germany on July 25, 1838 and came to America fifty-three years ago. He was a farmer and followed that means of livelihood until he came to Estherville.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Marie Elce and four sons, C. M. of this city, J. A. of Dixon, Ill., John of Fennimore, Wis., and M. S. of Granville, N.D. All but the last named was present at the funeral which was held Friday morning at ten o’clock from the Catholic church, Rev. Father Kelley of Graettinger was in charge of the services. A nephew of Mr. Whitish, Melvin Lamanski of Dixon, Ill, was also here for the funeral. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, October 29, 1924)
