Rhoda Sykes 1881-1893

Miss Rhoda, the thirteen year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Sykes, died last Saturday night [December 30, 1893]. The little girl was sick only a short time before she died. She was a promising child and beloved by her schoolmates and many friends who sympathize with her afflicted parents in this great sorrow. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, January 4, 1894)

Another child of Walter Wratten died of diphtheria last week, making the second, and on Saturday the 12 year old sister of Mr. [Mrs.] Wratten, who had been nursing in the family, also died with the same disease. The girl was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Sykes. The afflicted relatives have the sympathy of all in their great sorrow. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, January 4, 1894)
