Matt Scholtes Services Held Today in Estherville
Estherville – Matthias (Matt) Scholtes, 90, died Friday, Sept. 6, at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with the Msgr. James H. Duhigg officiating. Interment was at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Estherville. Rosary was recited at Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville Sunday evening.
Mr. Scholtes, the son of Peter and Anna Scholtes, was born Nov. 14, 1883 at Union Hill, Minn., and, as a child, moved with his family to Ellsworth, Minn., where he received his education.
Shortly after finishing school, Mr. Scholtes began working for the Rock Island Railroad and worked continuously for the Railroad until his retirement as an engineer in 1949.
On July 2, 1924, he was united in marriage to Ellen Doyle at Chester, with the couple moving to Estherville following their marriage where they continued to make their home.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Scholtes is survived by his wife, Ellen; one son, Gerald of Northridge, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Lyncy of Anaheim, Calif.; and Mary Scholtes of Oakland, Calif.; five grandchildren; one brother, Frank, of Milbank, S.D.; three sisters, Sister M. Winifred of Rochester, Minn., Mrs. Elizabeth Trevett of Milbank, S.D., and Mrs. Clara Haley of Sioux City. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers for Mr. Scholtes services were Earl Bagan, Mike Clahan, Peter Geil, Clifford Hunt, Raymond Keifer and E. G. Stavros. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 9, 1974)
