Bernard Reynolds, Former County Sheriff, Dies Suddenly
Bernard (Barney) Reynolds, 50, former Emmet County sheriff for 11 years, and well-known law enforcement officer in the county and the city of Estherville for 24 years, died suddenly in Las Vegas, Nev., shortly after noon Tuesday. The cause of the death has not bee determined.Mr. Reynolds was born and raised in Estherville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ona Reynolds, and graduated from the Estherville High School. He immediately enlisted in the armed services after graduation.
In 1942, he married the former Elaine Sevatson of Wallingford, in Virginia City, Nev. Three children were born to the union, including two sons, Jerry Reynolds, Bloomington, Ill., Tom Reynolds, Las Vegas, and Cynthia Reynolds, Los Angeles, Calif.
He entered the law enforcement field following his discharge form the armed services, and rose to the position of the Estherville Chief of Police, before taking a post as a deputy sheriff in Emmet County for several years.
Mr. Reynolds won in every election for the position of Emmet County Sheriff, and after 11 years at the post, retired to accept the position in Las Vegas in security work at the Frontier Club, one of several clubs owned by Howard Hughes.
Besides his three children, he is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Francis Reynolds; one brother, Michael Reynolds, Estherville; and two sisters, Mrs. Vernon Goecke, Estherville, and Mrs. Jerome Paulson, Perry. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Douglas.
Mr. Reynolds was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville, where a memorial service is planned at 9 a.m. Saturday.
He wished his body to be donated to the University of California at Los Angeles Medical Department. No interment of the body is planned at the present time, depending on the acceptance of the body by the UCLA Medical Department. No other arrangements are known at this time, relatives said. Bernard Reynolds Rites Set Here Saturday
Relatives of former Emmet County Sheriff Bernard (Barney) Reynolds have indicated a change in the plans for funeral rites and interment since the first notice of Mr. Reynolds’ death on Tuesday.The body will be brought to Estherville for rites at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, according to Frank Fuhrman of the Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville, who is in charge of arrangements.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. James H. Duhigg will officiate in the rites. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s cemetery. A Rosary will be recited at the Fuhrman Funeral Home at 8 p.m. Friday. Friends may call any time at the funeral home on Friday until time of the service.
Pallbearers names include Sheriff Robert Knox, David Fitzgibbons, Linn Foderberg, John McFadden, Walter Zitterich and Harvey Weber. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 21, 1971)
