Estherville Youth Dies While Playing
Estherville – A 13-year-old Estherville boy was found dead Sunday after he accidentally hanged himself, Emmet County sheriff’s officers said.

Delray B. Petersen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Petersen, was found about 3:30 p.m. in the garage by his mother, where he had been playing with his 5-year-old brother, according to Mrs. Petersen. Dr. Roy Turner, Emmet County coroner, Armstrong, ruled the boy’s death accidental.

Attempts to revive the youth with artificial respiration failed.

The youth had been playing with a rope in the garage when the accident occurred. Exact details of the tragedy are not known.

Delray, born April 23, 1960, was an eighth grade student at Estherville Junior High. He was also an altar boy at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, a Boy Scout in Troop 31 and a former Daily News carrier.

He is survived by his parents; three sisters, Corene, 14; Renetta, 12; and Marilyn, 9; two brothers, Dennis, 10; and Douglas, 5; all living at home; and one grandmother, Mrs. John Leonard, Emmetburg.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church here with interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Visitation may be made after noon Tuesday at Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 25, 1974)
