Clara Kennedy
Estherville – Funeral services for Clara Kennedy, 86, Estherville, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and burial at the church cemetery. She died March 3 at Holy Family Hospital.

Miss Kennedy was born Sept. 30, 1889 in DeKalb, Ill. to Mr. and Mrs. James Kennedy and moved with her parents to a farm near Wallingford in 1894. She was educated in Emmet County schools and was a 1909 graduate of Estherville High School. She received her college education at the University of Iowa, University of Arizona, George Washington University at Washington, D.C., and Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She taught in Emmet County schools and in city schools at Estherville, Gruver and Council Bluffs.

She was appointed to the war department in Washington, D.C. where she served as a bookkeeper under Brigadier General Lord, director of finance for the Army. She served as Estherville postmaster from 1934 to 1953 when she retired. Miss Kennedy had been active in the March of Dimes, was a charter member of the Wa-Tan-Ye, a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. G. M. (Kathryn) Donovan, and Betty Kennedy, both of Estherville, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Friends may call at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, anytime Friday. An 8 p.m. rosary will be said Friday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 4, 1976)
